The pigeon colony has a pigeon shed of 14 meters to its disposal, which is divided into 6 compartments. The pigeon houses get a lot of light and air and on the floor are rasters or straw. During the winter approximately 120 pigeons populate the pigeon shed, among which of them are 20 breeding couples. In order to guarantee the rejuvenation of the colony/pigeon house, about 60 young pigeons are bred in springtime.

The care for the pigeons is completely adjusted to Willem's job, which prevents him from spending a great amount of his time on the pigeons. "My pigeons always fly the nest and always have several reservoirs with water as well as plenty of food. The brand of the food doesn't matter to me that much, as long as it is quality food. It happens often that I arrive home from work later in the evening. If there is time left, the pigeons are obliged to play/train/fly with the flag."

Because of the active predatory birds, the pigeons are being locked up during winter time. From the beginning of May the pigeons are being released again. "Every time I try to let a (complete) couple fly on young pigeons of 6 days," says Willem. The yearling pigeons get 1 or 2 long distances out of which they have to earn at least one victory. If not, they will not survive the next selection. If I do concessions on this matter, this will undoubtedly have a negative effect on my achievements." I only focus on the 6 long distance fond club flights. All other flights require preparation and the pigeons have to spread their shape/condition over several flights. I believe chances of success are increasing when only focusing on a limited number of flights.
I am therefore less successful in the other flights than the 6 fond club flights, which is completely in line with my strategy.

The young pigeons are only being trained/only fly when there is time for it.
